Firstpublishedin1872,thistwo-volumememoirbyexplorer,ethnographeranddiplomatSirRichardBurton(1821–90)waswrittenwhileBurtonandJohnHanningSpekeweremakingpreparationsfortheirexpeditiontosolveoneofthemajorgeographicalmysteriesofthenineteenthcentury-thelocationofthesourceoftheNile.ThepairarrivedinZanzibarinDecember1856,andBurtonmadedetailednotesonhissurroundingswhichweredevelopedintoVolume1,whichfocuseson'TheCityandtheIsland',includingBurton'sjourneypreparationsandarrival.Hediscussesthesignificanceofthe'Nilequestion'aswellasrecordinggeographical,botanical,meteorologicalandethnographicobservations.Themanuscriptonwhichthebookisbased,entrustedtoanEastIndiaCompanyofficialfordispatchtotheRoyalGeographicalSociety,wasinitiallymisplaced,thusdelayingpublicationbytwelveyears,butenablingBurtontoaddachapteronSpeke'sachievementanduntimelydeath.
