Thefirsteditionof"SoundandStructuralVibration"waswrittenintheearly1980s.Sincethen,twomajordevelopmentshavetakenplaceinthefieldofvibroacoustics.Powerfulcomputationalmethodsandproceduresforthenumericalanalysisofstructuralvibration,acousticalfieldsandacousticalinteractionsbetweenfluidsandstructureshavebeendevelopedandthesearenowuniversallyemployedbyresearchers,consultantsandindustrialorganizations.Advancesinsignalprocessingsystemsandalgorithms,intransducers,andinstructuralmaterialsandformsofconstruction,havefacilitatedthedevelopmentofpracticalmeansofapplyingactiveandadaptivecontrolsystemstostructuresforthepurposesofreducingormodifyingstructuralvibrationandtheassociatedsoundradiationandtransmission.Inthisgreatlyexpandedandextensivelyrevisededition,theauthorshaveretainedmostoftheanalyticallybasedmaterialthatformsthepedagogicalcontentofthefirstedition,andhaveexpandedittopresentthetheoreticalfoundationsofmodernnumericalanalysis.Applicationofthelatterisillustratedbyexamplesthathavebeenchosentocomplementtheanalyticalapproachestosolvingfairlysimpleproblemsofsoundradiation,transmissionandfluid-structuralcouplingthatarepresentedinthefirstedition.Thenumberofexamplesofexperimentaldatathatrelatetothetheoreticalcontent,andillustrateimportantfeaturesofvibroacousticinteraction,hasbeenaugmentedbytheinclusionofaselectionfromthevastamountofmaterialpublishedduringthepasttwentyfiveyears.Thefinalchapterontheactivecontrolofsoundandvibrationhasnoprecursorinthefirstedition.Itcoverstheoreticalapproachestomodelingandanalysis.Itishighlyapplicabletochallengesinindustryandacademia.Itisintendedforengineeringstudentstousethroughouttheircareer.
