BorninLittleRock,Arkansas,MercerMayerspenthischildhoodhuntinglizardsandsnakesintheswampsnearhishome.Duringhisteenageyears,heattendedtheHonoluluAcademyofArts.HelaterreceivedadditionaltrainingattheArtStudentsLeagueinNewYorkCity.Uponcompletionofhisstudies,hesetoutwithpenandinktowriteandillustrateacollectionofchildren'sbooks,reflectingmanyoftheadventuresheexperiencedasachild.In2007,Mr.MayerwascommissionedbyLauraBushtocreatetheartworkusedfortheNationalBookFestivalheldonSeptember29ontheNationalMall.Hewasanhonoredguesttotheevent,givingademonstrationandautographinghundredsofbooksforfanswhoattended.
