Publishedinconjunctionwiththefirstlarge-scaleretrospectiveofPicasso'ssculptureintheUSsinceTheMuseumofModernArt'shistoricshowof1967,PicassoSculptureisasweepingsurveyoftheartist'sprofoundlyinnovativeandinfluentialworkinthreedimensions.Overthecourseofhislongcareer,Picassodevotedhimselftosculpturewholeheartedly,ifepisodically,usingbothtraditionalandunconventionalmaterialsandtechniques.Unlikepainting,inwhichhewasformallytrainedandthroughwhichhemadehisliving,sculptureoccupiedauniquelypersonalandexperimentalstatusinPicasso'soeuvre.Hekeptthemajorityofhissculpturesinhisprivatepossessionduringhislifetime,anditwasonlyinthelate1960sthatthepublicbecamefullyawareofthissideofhisoeuvre.PicassoSculpturepresentsapproximately150sculptures--manyofthemcapturedinnewlycommissionedandsometimesmulti-viewphotographs--alongsideaselectionofworksonpaperandphotographs.OrganizedintochaptersthatcorrespondtodistinctperiodsduringwhichPicassodevotedhimselftosculpture,thepublicationfeaturesanintroductionbytheexhibitioncuratorsaswellasarichlyillustrateddocumentarychronologyfocusingonthesculpturesincludedintheexhibition.AcomprehensivebibliographyandlistofhistoricexhibitionsrelatedtoPicasso'sworkinsculptureclosesthevolume,advancingtheunderstandingofPicasso'spracticeandlifelongcommitmenttoconstantreinvention.
