SigmundFreudwasbornin1856inMoravia;betweentheagesoffourandeighty-twohishomewasinVienna:in1938Hitler'sinvasionofAustriaforcedhimtoseekasyluminLondon,wherehediedinthefollowingyear.Hiscareerbeganwithseveralyearsofbrilliantworkontheanatomyandphysiologyofthenervoussystem.Hewasalmostthirtywhen,afteraperiodofstudyunderCharcotinParis,hisinterestsfirstturnedtopsychology,andanothertenyearsofclinicalworkinVienna(atfirstincollaborationwithBreuer,anoldercolleague)sawthebirthofhiscreation,psychoanalysis.Thisbegansimplyasamethodoftreatingneuroticpatientsbyinvestigatingtheirminds,butitquicklygrewintoanaccumulationofknowledgeabouttheworkingsofthemindingeneral,whethersickorhealthy.Freudwasthisabletodemonstratethenormaldevelopmentofthesexualinstinctinchildhoodand,largelyonthebasisofanexaminationofdreams,arrivedathisfundamentaldiscoveryoftheunconsciousforcesthatinfluenceoureverydaythoughtsandactions.Freud'slifewasuneventful,buthisideashaveshapednotonlymanyspecialistdisciplines,butthewholeintellectualclimateofthetwentiethcentury.
