HermanHessewasborninsouthernGermanyin1877.Hesseconcentratedonwritingpoetryasayoungman,buthisfirstsuccessfulbookwasanovel,PeterCamenzind(1904).Duringthewar,Hessewasactivelyinvolvedinreliefefforts.Depression,criticismforhispacifistviews,andaseriesofpersonalcrisesledHessetoundergopsychoanalysiswithJ.B.Lang.OutoftheseyearscameDemian(1919),anovelwhosemaincharacteristornbetweentheorderlinessofbourgeoisexistenceandtheturbulentandenticingworldofsensualexperience.ThisdichotomyisprominentinHesse'ssubsequentnovels,includingSiddhartha(1922),Steppenwolf(1927),andNarcissusandGoldmund(1930).Hesseworkedonhismagnumopus,TheGlassBeadGame(1943),fortwelveyears.ThisnovelwasspecificallycitedwhenhewasawardedtheNobelPrizeforLiteraturein1946.HessediedathishomeinSwitzerlandin1962.
