JimDaviswasbornonJuly28,1945,inMarion,Indiana.HelaterattendedBallStateUniversityinMuncie,Indiana,wherehedistinguishedhimselfbyearningoneofthelowestcumulativegradepointaveragesinthehistoryoftheuniversity.(Incidentally,afellowclassmatenamedDavidLettermanearnedtheother).TheGarfieldstripwasbornonJune19,1978,syndicatedinforty-oneU.S.newspapers.Todayit’ssyndicatedinmorethan2,100newspapersworldwidewithmorethan200millionreaders,leadingGuinnessWorldRecordstonameGarfieldTheMostWidelySyndicatedComicStripintheWorld.DavishashadmanysuccesseswithGarfield,includingfourEmmyAwardsforOutstandingAnimatedProgramandinductionintotheLicensingHallofFame(1998),buthismostprizedawardsarefromhispeersintheNationalCartoonistSociety:BestHumorStrip(1981and1985),theElzieSegarAward(1990),andthecovetedReubenAward(1990)foroverallexcellenceincartooning.
