AboutthePhotographerLeeFriedlander,bornin1934,beganphotographingtheAmericansociallandscapein1948includingportraitsofjazzmusiciansandstreetphotography.Withanabilitytoorganizeavastamountofvisualinformation,Friedlanderhasmadehumorousandpoignantimagesamongthechaosofcitylife,denselandscapeandcountlessothersubjects.Friedlander’sworkwasincludedinthehighlyinfluential1967“NewDocuments”exhibition,curatedbyJohnSzarkowskiattheMuseumofModernArt.AmongthemanyadditionalmonographsonFriedlander’sworkareSticksandStones,Self-Portraits,LettersFromthePeople,ApplesandOlives,Family,andPeopleatWork.FriedlanderwasthesubjectofamajortravelingretrospectiveandcatalogorganizedbytheMuseumofModernArtin2005.AbouttheAuthorEmilyBallewNeffiscuratorofAmericanpaintingandsculptureattheMuseumofFineArts,Houston,andcuratorof“TheModernWest”exhibition,2006.
