CountLeoTolstoywasbornonSeptember9,1828,inYasnayaPolyana,Russia.Orphanedatnine,hewasbroughtupbyanelderlyauntandeducatedbyFrenchtutorsuntilhematriculatedatKazanUniversityin1844.In1847,hegaveuphisstudiesand,afterseveralaimlessyears,volunteeredformilitarydutyinthearmy,servingasajuniorofficerintheCrimeanWarbeforeretiringin1857.In1862,TolstoymarriedSophieBehrs,amarriagethatwastobecome,forhim,bitterlyunhappy.Hisdiary,startedin1847,wasusedforself-studyandself-criticism;itservedasthesourcefromwhichhedrewmuchofthematerialthatappearednotonlyinhisgreatnovelsWarandPeace(1869)andAnnaKarenina(1877),butalsoinhisshorterworks.Seekingreligiousjustificationforhislife,TolstoyevolvedanewChristianitybaseduponhisowninterpretationoftheGospels.YasnayaPolyanabecameameccaforhismanyconverts.Attheageofeighty-two,whileawayfromhome,thewritersufferedabreakdowninhishealthinAstapovo,Riazan,andhediedthereonNovember20,1910.AnthonyBriggshaswritten,translated,oreditedtwentybooksinthefieldsofRussianandEnglishliterature.OrlandoFigesistheprizewinningauthorofAPeople’sTragedyandNatasha’sDance.HeisaregularcontributortoTheNewYorkTimes,TheWashingtonPost,andTheNewYorkReviewofBooks.
