Thisbookisanexcellentworkofscholarship.ItseekstoredefinetheearlymodernEnglisheconomybyrejectingtheconceptofcapitalism,andinsteadexplorestheculturalmeaningofcredit,resultingfromthewayinwhichitwaseconomicallystructured.Itisamajorargumentofthebookthatmoneywasusedonlyinalimitednumberofexchanges,andthatcreditintermsofhouseholdreputation,wasa'culturalcurrency'oftrustusedtotransactmostbusiness.Asthemarketexpandedinthelate-sixteenthcenturysuchtrustbecamehardertomaintain,leadingtoanexplosionofdebtlitigation,whichinturnresultedinsocialrelationsbeingpartiallyredefinedintermsofcontractualequality.
