ProductDescriptionTheworld'sseasandoceanshaveplayedrolesofgreatsignificanceinworldhistory,servingvariouslyashighwaysoftrade,routesofmigration,lifelinesofempires,spawninggroundsofcreolecultures,andvenuesofopportunityforpiratesandsmugglers.Yethistorianshaveonlyrecentlybeguntocharttheexperiencesofmaritimeregionsinrichdetailandpenetratethehistoricalprocessesatworkthere.Seascapesmakesamajorcontributiontotheseeffortsbybringingtogetheroriginalscholarshiponhistoricalissuesarisingfrommaritimeregionsaroundtheworld.Theessayspresentedheretakeavarietyofapproaches.Onegroupexaminesthematerial,cultural,andintellectualconstructsthatinformandexplainhistoricalexperiencesofmaritimeregions.Anothersetdiscussesefforts--somemoresuccessfulthanothers--toimposepoliticalandmilitarycontrolovermaritimeregions.Athirdgroupfocusesonissuesofsocialhistorysuchaslabororganization,informationflows,andthedevelopmentofpoliticalconsciousnessamongsubalternpopulations.ThefinalessaysdealwithpiratesandeffortstocontroltheminMediterranean,Japanese,andAtlanticwaters.Seascapesmakesseveralnotablecontributionstohistoricalscholarship.Itconstitutesarichsamplerofrecentscholarshiponthehistoryofseaandoceanbasinsandmakesclearthatactivitiespursuedbyhumangroupsovermaritimespacesdemandthehistorian'sattentionasmuchasthosecarriedoutonland.Theessaysarticulatenewregionalandglobalgeographiesthatcomplementtheland-basedgeographythatinformsmosthistoricalscholarship.Theychartseveraloftheverydifferentwayshumangroupshaveexploitedthepossibilitiesofferedbydifferentmaritimeenvironments.Indoingso,theyreinforcethepointthathistoricalscholarshipmustpaycloseattentiontotheparticularitiesofindividualregions.Finally,thevolumeenrichesunderstandingoftheglobalpastbyarticulatingmaritimeperspectivesonthepastandinsistingthathistoriansconsiderrelationshipsbetweenlandsandseasintheireffortstounderstandtheworldanditsdevelopmentthroughtime.
