JosephJacobswasaJewishhistorianandleadingfolkloristwhosespecialpassionwasfairytales.HewasborninAustraliaandattendedtheUniversityofSydneywherehewonascholarshipforclassics,mathematics,andchemistry.HecompletedhisstudiesatSt.John'sCollege,Cambridge.HeeventuallycametoprominenceasthewriterofaseriesofarticlesinTheTimesonthepersecutionofJewsinRussia.Between1882and1900hegavemuchtimetoanthropologicalstudiesinconnectionwiththeJewishrace,andbecameanauthorityonthesubject.Buthisinterestswerevaried.From1899to1900heeditedthejournalFolklore,andfrom1890to1912heeditedfivecollectionsoffairytales.In1906hemovedtoNewYorkandbecameregistrarandprofessorofEnglishattheJewishTheologicalSeminaryofAmerica.HediedinJanuary1916.
