KateMcMullanwasborninSt.Louis,Missouri,in1947.Whenshewasasmallchild,shelistenedasherfatherreadthecomicsaloudandhermothersharedbooksandpoems.Assoonasshecould,McMullanreadherwaythroughthepubliclibrary.Shehadtwoguineapigs,GeorgeandZaaZaa,whoseanticshavehadnewlifeinthestoriesofFluffy,theClassroomGuineaPig,oneofseveralseriesMcMullanhasauthored.Whileshehasalwayswritten,McMullanbeganherprofessionallifeasateacher,graduatingfromtheUniversityofTulsaandOhioStateUniversitywithBachelor'sandMaster'sdegrees,respectively,inelementaryeducation.Shetaughtfourthandsixthgradesininner-cityLosAngelesandonanAmericanAirForcebaseinGermanybeforebecominganeditoroflanguageartsandaudiovisualmaterialsforaNewYorkCitypublishinghousein1976.Herfirstchildren'sbook,writtenasKatyHall—hernameatthetime—waspublishedoneyearlater.Sincethen,McMullanhaswrittenmorethan50booksforchildren.Generationsofchildrenhavedelightedinthejokesandriddlesshehaswrittenandcollected(oftenincollaborationwithLisaEisenberg)underthenameKatyHall;asKateMcMullan,shehaswrittennonfiction,severalpopularmiddle-gradenovels,andpicturebooksillustratedbyherhusband,JimMcMullan.AsK.H.McMullan,shehascreatedtheimaginativeDragonSlayers'Academyseries.McMullanalsoteacheswritingforchildrenatNewYorkUniversity'sSchoolofContinuingandProfessionalEducationandisonthefacultyoftheNewSchool'sMFAWritingProgram.McMullanlivesinNewYorkCityandSagHarbor,NewYork,withherhusband,theirdaughter,andtwocats,GeorgeandWendy.
