TheUSSIndianapoliswasthelastshipsunkduringtheSecondWorldWar.SavagedbyasalvooftorpedoesfromaJapanesesubmarine,thewarship,oneofthefastestintheUSNavy,sankinamatterofminutes.Onethousandtwohundredmenwentintothewater,andonly321weretosurvive.Thisistheirstory.On30July1945theIndianapoliswasreturningfromthesmallislandofTinian,havingdeliveredthecomponentsoftheatombomb'babyboy',whichwastodecimateHiroshimaandbringontheendofthewar.Asthetorpedoesrippedintothesideoftheshiphundredsofmenwerekilled.Thoseluckyenoughtosurviveinthewaterweretofaceextremesofphysicalandmentalhardship.Manywerelefttofloatintheoceanwithlittleornofoodordrinkingwaterindeterioratinglifejacketsand,mostchillinglyofall,opentoattacksbysharks.Thetestimoniesofthosewholivedspeakoftheextremesofhumanemotion,incrediblecourageandunforgettabledespair.Thevisceralexperiencesofthosefivedaysweretohauntthemfortherestoftheirlives.TheIndianapoliswascaptainedbythedashingandcharismaticCaptainButlerMcVay,andhisstoryisatragicone.Foracaptaintolosehisshipincombatisperhapsthehardestblow,butMcVaywasdoublymarked,ashewasheldresponsibleforthelossandcourt-martialled-theonlynavalcaptainevertobecourt-martialledforthesinkingofhisship.TwentyyearsaftertheIndianapoliswenttothebottom,tormentedbytheexperienceandtheresentmentofmanyofthefamiliesofthosewholosttheirlivesinthedisaster,hetookhisownlife.Thosewhoalsosurvivedmaintainthattherewasnothinghecouldhavedonetopreventthedisaster,andcontinuetocampaigntoclearthecaptain'sname.Thisbookisalsohisstory.
