SydHoff(September4,1912Bronx,NewYork–May12,2004)wasaJewish-Americancartoonistandchildren'sbookauthor.AlthoughbestknownforhisclassicearlyreaderDannyandtheDinosaur,hiscartoonsappearedinamultitudeofgenres,includingadvertisingcommissionsforsuchcompaniesasEvereadyBatteries,Jell-O,S.O.SPads,Rambler,RalstonCerealandmore.WhileHoffwasstillinhighschool,MiltGross,apopular1930scartoonist,toldhimatanassemblythat"Kid,somedayyou'llbeagreatcartoonist!"At16,heenrolledattheNationalAcademyofDesigninNewYorkCity.At18,hesoldhisfirstcartoontoTheNewYorker,andwouldsellatotalof571ofthemtothepublicationfrom1931to1975.Hoffbecameknownforhiscartoons,inTheNewYorker,depictingtenementsandlower-middleclasslifeinthecity.Hoffdrewtwolong-runningsyndicatedcomicstrips:Tuffy(1939–1949)andLaughItOff(1958–1978).OneofHoff'srecurringcharacters,awalrus-mustachedman,eventuallyappearedasthefatherinhisdailyTuffy,donefortheKingFeaturesSyndicatefrom1940to1950.Hiscartoonshaveappearedinavarietyofpublicationsincluding,theNewYorker,Esquire,Lookmagazine.Hewasalsothehostofatelevisionshow,TalesofHoff,inwhichhedrewandtoldstories.Hoffwroteandillustratedover60volumesintheHarperCollins"ICanRead"seriesforbeginningreaders,mostnotablySammytheSealandthepopularDannyandtheDinosaur(1958),whichsold10millioncopiesandhasbeentranslatedintoadozenlanguages.In1976,HoffeditedandpublishedEditorialandPoliticalCartooning:FromEarlierTimestothePresent,whichcontainsover700examplesofworksfromtheworld'seditorialandpoliticalcartoons.
