StanislavGrof,M.D.,isapsychiatristwithmorethanthirtyyearsofresearchexperienceinnonordinarystatesofconsciousness.HewasbornandeducatedinPrague,Czechoslovakia,andreceivedanM.D.fromPrague'sCharlesUniversitySchoolofMedicine,wherehespecializedinpsychiatry.HewastheprincipleinvestigatorforaprogramatthePsychiatricResearchInstitutethatexploredthepotentialofpsychedelictherapy.Forhisdissertationonthissubject,hewasawardedaPh.D.bytheCzechoslovakAcademyofSciences.
In1967hewasinvitedtoJohnsHopkinsUniversityasaclinicalandresearchfellowandtotheresearchunitofSpringGroveStateHospitalinBaltimore,Maryland,wherehecontinuedhispsychadelicresearch.In1969hewasofferedthepositionofchiefofpsychiatricresearchattheMarylandPsychiatricResearchCenterandofassistantprofessorofpsychologyatHenryPhippsClinic.Theresearchteamheheadedsystematicallyexploredthevalueofpsychedelictherapyinneurotics,alcoholics,drugaddicts,andterminalcancerpatients.
Stanislavcontinuedthesefunctionsuntil1973,whenhemovedtoCaliforniaandbecamescholarinresidenceattheEsalenInstituteinBigSur.Sincethattime,hehasfocusedonexploringthepotentialofexperimentalpsychotherapywithoutdrugs,inadditiontowritingandconductingseminarsworldwide.HeisoneofthefoundersandchieftheoreticiansoftranspersonalpsychologyandthefoundingpresidentoftheInternationalTranspersonalAssociation.HehaspublishedmorethanninetypapersinprofessionaljournalsandistheauthorofRealmsoftheHumanUnconscious,TheHumanEncounterwithDeath,LSDPsychotherapy,BeyondtheBrain,andTheAdventureofSelf-Discovery.HewasalsoeditorofthevolumesAncientWisdomandModernScienceandHumanSurvivalandConsciousnessEvolution.
