CharlesDickenswasborninalittlehouseinLandport,Portsea,England,onFebruary7,1812.Thesecondofeightchildren,hegrewupinafamilyfrequentlybesetbyfinancialinsecurity.Atageeleven,DickenswastakenoutofschoolandsenttoworkinLondonbackingwarehouse,wherehisjobwastopastelabelsonbottlesforsixshillingsaweek.HisfatherJohnDickens,wasawarmheartedbutimprovidentman.WhenhewascondemnedtheMarshelaPrisonforunpaiddebts,heunwiselyagreedthatCharlesshouldstayinlodgingsandcontinueworkingwhiletherestofthefamilyjoinedhiminjail.Thisthree-monthseparationcausedCharlesmuchpain;hisexperiencesasachildaloneinahugecity–cold,isolatedwithbarelyenoughtoeat–hauntedhimfortherestofhislife.Whenthefamilyfortunesimproved,Charleswentbacktoschool,afterwhichhebecameanofficeboy,afreelancereporterandfinallyanauthor.WithPickwickPapers(1836-7)heachievedimmediatefame;inafewyearshewaseasilythepostpopularandrespectedwriterofhistime.IthasbeenestimatedthatoneoutofeverytenpersonsinVictorianEnglandwasaDickensreader.OliverTwist(1837),NicholasNickleby(1838-9)andTheOldCuriosityShop(1840-41)werehugesuccesses.MartinChuzzlewit(1843-4)waslessso,butDickensfolloweditwithhisunforgettable,AChristmasCarol(1843),BleakHouse(1852-3),HardTimes(1854)andLittleDorrit(1855-7)revealhisdeepeningconcernfortheinjusticesofBritishSociety.ATaleofTwoCities(1859),GreatExpectations(1860-1)andOurMutualFriend(1864-5)completehismajorworks.Dickens’smarriagetoCatherineHoggarthproducedtenchildrenbutendedinseparationin1858.Inthatyearhebeganaseriesofexhaustingpublicreadings;hishealthgraduallydeclined.Afterputtinginafullday’sworkathishomeatGadsHill,KentonJune8,1870,Dickenssufferedastroke,andhediedthefollowingday.,,
