SirErnstHansJosefGombrich,OM,CBE(30March1909–3November2001)wasanAustrian-bornarthistorianwhobecameanaturalizedBritishcitizenin1947.[1]HespentmostofhisworkinglifeintheUnitedKingdom.Heistheauthorofmanyworksofculturalhistoryandarthistory,includingTheStoryofArt,abookwidelyregardedasoneofthemostaccessibleintroductionstothevisualarts.BiographyThesonofKarlGombrichandLeonieHock,GombrichwasborninVienna,Austria-Hungary,intoanassimilatedbourgeoisfamilyofJewishoriginwhowerepartofasophisticatedsocialandmusicalmilieu.HisfatherwasalawyerandformerclassmateofHugovonHofmannsthalandhismotherwasdistinguishedpianistwhograduatedfromtheViennaConservatoirewiththeSchool'sMedalofDistinction.AttheConservatoireshewasapupilof,amongstothers,AntonBruckner.However,ratherthanfollowacareerasaconcertpianist(whichwouldhavebeendifficulttocombinewithherfamilylifeinthisperiod)shebecameanassistantofTheodorLeschetizky.ShealsoknewArnoldSchoenberg,GustavMahler,HugoWolfandJohannesBrahms[3].RudolfSerkinwasaclosefamilyfriend.AdolfBuschandmembersoftheBuschQuartetregularlymetandplayedinthefamilyhome.ThroughouthislifeGombrichmaintainedadeeploveandknowledgeofclassicalmusic.HewasacompetentcellistandinlaterlifeathomeinLondonregularlyplayedthechambermusicofHaydn,Mozart,Schubert,BeethovenandotherswithhiswifeandeldersisterDeaForsdyke,aconcertviolinist.GombrichwaseducatedatTheresianumSecondarySchoolandatViennaUniversitybeforecomingtoBritainin1936,wherehetookupapostasaresearchassistantattheWarburgInstitute,UniversityofLondon.In1936,hemarriedIlseHeller,apupilofhismother,andherselfanaccomplishedpianist.Theironlychild,Richard,wentontobecomeanotedIndologistandscholarofBuddhism,actingastheBodenProfessorofSanskritatOxfordUniversityfrom1976to2004.DuringWorldWarII,GombrichworkedfortheBBCWorldService,monitoringGermanradiobroadcasts.Whenin1945anupcomingannouncementwasprefacedbyaBrucknersymphonywrittenforWagner'sdeath,GombrichguessedcorrectlythatHitlerwasdeadandpromptlybrokethenewstoChurchill.HereturnedtotheWarburgInstituteinNovember1945,wherehebecameSeniorResearchFellow(1946),Lecturer(1948),Reader(1954),andeventuallyProfessoroftheHistoryoftheClassicalTraditionanddirectoroftheinstitute(1959–72).HewaselectedaFellowoftheBritishAcademyin1960,madeCBEin1966,knightedin1972,andappointedamemberoftheOrderofMeritin1988.Hewastherecipientofnumerousadditionalhonours,includingGoethePrize1994andBalzanPrizein1985forHistoryofWesternArt.GombrichwasclosetoanumberofAustrianémigréswhofledtotheWestpriortotheAnschluss,amongthemKarlPopper(towhomhewasespeciallyclose),FriedrichHayekandMaxPerutz.HewasinstrumentalinbringingtopublicationPopper'smagnumopusTheOpenSocietyandItsEnemies.EachhadknowntheotheronlyfleetinglyinVienna,asGombrich'sfatherservedhislawapprenticeshipwithPopper'sfather.Theybecamelifelongfriendsinexile.[edit]WorkGombrich'sfirstbook,andtheonlyonehedidnotwriteinEnglish,wasEinekurzeWeltgeschichtefürjungeLeser(Ashorthistoryoftheworldforyoungreaders),publishedinGermanyin1936.Itwasverypopularandtranslatedintoseverallanguages,butwasnotavailableinEnglishuntil2005,whenatranslationofarevisededitionwaspublishedasALittleHistoryoftheWorld.Hedidmostofthistranslationandrevisionhimself,anditwascompletedbyhislong-timeassistantandsecretaryCarolineMustillandhisgranddaughterLeonieGombrichafterhisdeath[4].TheStoryofArt,firstpublishedin1950andcurrentlyinits16thedition,iswidelyregardedasoneofthemostaccessibleintroductionstothehistoryofvisualarts.Originallyintendedforadolescentreaders,ithassoldmillionsofcopiesandbeentranslatedintomorethan30languages.OthermajorpublicationsincludeArtandIllusion(1960),regardedbycriticstobehismostinfluentialandfar-reachingwork,andtheessaysgatheredinMeditationsonaHobbyHorse(1963)andTheImageandtheEye(1981).OtherimportantbooksareAbyWarburg:AnIntellectualBiography(1970),TheSenseofOrder(1979)andThePreferenceforthePrimitive(posthumouslyin2002).Thecompletelistofhispublications,E.H.Gombrich:ABibliography,waspublishedbyJosephBurneyTrappin2000.
