YevgenyZamyatinwasbornin1884.Hewasarrestedasastudentin1905byTsaristpoliceforbeingaBolshevik.HewasthensenttoEnglandtoworkonRussianicebreakersinNewcastle.Hehasbeendescribedasa'dapper,tweedynavalengineer'.HewasalsoafanofH.G.Wells.Aftertherevolutionin1917hereturnedtoRussiaandworkedforGorky.HewasarrestedagainbytheSovietauthoritiesin1919and1922andforbiddentopublishhiswork.In1931StalinsurprisinglygrantedhimpermissiontomovetoParis.HediedthereinMarch,1937.
