BorninCapeTown,SouthAfrica,onFebruary9,1940,JohnMichaelCoetzeestudiedfirstatCapeTownandlaterattheUniversityofTexasatAustin,whereheearnedaPh.D.degreeinliterature.In1972hereturnedtoSouthAfricaandjoinedthefacultyoftheUniversityofCapeTown.HisworksoffictionincludeDusklands,WaitingfortheBarbarians,whichwonSouthAfrica’shighestliteraryhonor,theCentralNewsAgencyLiteraryAward,andtheLifeandTimesofMichaelK.,forwhichCoetzeewasawardedhisfirstBookerPrizein1983.Hehasalsopublishedamemoir,Boyhood:ScenesFromaProvincialLife,andseveralessayscollections.HehaswonmanyotherliteraryprizesincludingtheLannanAwardforFiction,theJerusalemPrizeandTheIrishTimesInternationalFictionPrize.In1999heagainwonBritain’sprestigiousBookerPrizeforDisgrace,becomingthefirstauthortowintheawardtwiceinits31-yearhistory.In2003,CoetzeewasawardedtheNobelPrizeinLiterature.
