Startingwithapreciseformulationofthetheoryandanaccountofthenecessarybackgroundofthetheoryandanaccountofthenecessarybackgroudofdifferentialgeometry，thesignificanceofspace-timecurvatureisdiscussedandtheglobalpropertiesofanumberofexactsolutionsofEinstein’sfieldequationsareexamined.Thetheoryofthecausalstructureofageneralspacetimeisdeveloped，andisusedtostudyblackholesandtoproveanumberoftheoremsestablishingtheinevitabilityofsingularitiesundercertainconditions.Theseconditionsareshowntobesatisfiedinthevicinityofstarsofmorethantwicethesolarmassneartheendpointoftheirnuclearevolution,andinatime-reversedsensefortheuniverseasawhole.Inthefirstcase,thesingularityisinsideablackhole,andinthesecondcase,itistheinitialsingularityinourpast.AdiscussionoftheCauchyproblemforGeneralRelativityisalsoincludedinthebook.
