MungoParkwasbornon10September1771,atFoulshiels,Scotland.Heexcelledacademically,studyingmedicineattheUniversityofEdinburgh.Hisfirstmajorcontributionwastobeinthefieldofnaturalscience,discoveringeightnewspeciesoffishoffSumatra.HistravelsinAfricahowever,andhiscourageousattemptstomapthecourseoftheNigerriversealedhisplaceinhistory.ManyconflictingreportsexistregardingPark'sdeath,butitisgenerallyacceptedtohavebeeninJanuary1806,ontheNiger.--ThistextreferstoanalternatePaperbackedition.
