BohumilHrabal(1914-1997)wasborninMoraviaandstartedwritingpoemsundertheinfluenceofFrenchsurrealism.Intheearly1950shebegantoexperimentwithastream-of-consciousnessstyle,andeventuallywrotesuchclassicsasCloselyWatchedTrains(madeintoanAcademyAward-winningfilmdirectedbyJiriMenzel),TheDeathofMr.Baltisberger,andTooLoudaSolitude.HefelltohisdeathfromthefifthfloorofaPraguehospital,apparentlytryingtofeedthepigeons.
