GeorgeOrwell(whoserealnamewasEricArthurBlair)wasbornin1903inIndiaandthenwenttoEtonwhenhisfamilymovedbacktoEngland.From1922to1927heservedwiththeIndianImperialPoliceinBurma,andexperiencethatinspiredhisfirstnovel,BurmeseDays(1934).HelivedinParisbeforereturningtoEngland,andDownandOutinParisandLondonwaspublishedin1936.AfterwritingTheRoadtoWiganPierandHomagetoCatalonia(hisaccountoffightingfortheRepublicansintheSpanishCivilWar),Orwellwasadmittedtoasanatoriumin1938andfromthenonwasneverfullyfit.HespentsixmonthsinMoroccowherehewroteComingUpforAir.DuringtheSecondWorldWarOrwellservedintheHomeGuardandworkedfortheBBC.HispoliticalallegoryAnimalFarmwaspublishedin1945anditwasthisnovel,togetherwithNineteenEighty-Four(1949),whichbroughthimintoworldwidefame.GeorgeOrwellwastakenseriouslyillinthewinterof1948-1949anddiedinLondonin1950.
