ThephilosopherFriedrichNietzschewasborninPrussiain1844.Afterthedeathofhisfather,aLutheranminister,Nietzschewasraisedfromtheageoffivebyhismotherinahouseholdofwomen.In1869hewasappointedProfessorofClassicalPhilologyattheUniversityofBasel,wherehetaughtuntil1879whenpoorhealthforcedhimtoretire.Heneverrecoveredfromanervousbreakdownin1889anddiedelevenyearslater.Knownforsayingthat“godisdead,”Nietzschepropoundedhismetaphysicalconstructofthesuperiorityofthedisciplinedindividual(superman)livinginthepresentovertraditionalvaluesderivedfromChristianityanditsemphasisonheavenlyrewards.HisideaswereappropriatedbytheFascists,whoturnedhistheoriesintosocialrealitiesthathehadneverintended.
