ThisvolumecontainsthefirstEnglishtranslationofEmileDurkheim'sTheRulesofSociologicalMethodthatdoesjusticeintermsofaccuracyandelegancetotheoriginaltext.Italsobringstogetherhismoreinterestingsubsequentstatementsonthenatureandscopeofsociologyanditsmethod.Theytakevariousforms,includingcontributionstodebatesandlettersandshowhimconfrontingcriticsandseekingtoclarifyhispositions.Hissuccessiveexpositionsanddefencesareinstructive,invariousways.InparticulartheythrowlightonDurkheim'sandtheDurkheimians'project;theymakeclearwherethelimitsofsuchaconceptionofsociologyandsocialsciencelie;andtheysuggestwhatpartextra-scientificinterestsandobjectivesmayhaveplayedinitsveryconstitution.Thereare,inshort,atleastthreewaysofreadingTheRulesandtheseaccompanyingtexts:asanexpressionofDurkheim'savowedintentions;asexemplifyingthelimitsofhisviewofsociology;andasastudyinthepoliticsoftheorising.

EmileDurkheim(1858–1917)wasaFrenchsociologist.Heformallyestablishedtheacademicdisciplineand,withKarlMarxandMaxWeber,iscommonlycitedastheprincipalarchitectofmodernsocialscienceandfatherofsociology.MuchofDurkheim'sworkwasconcernedwithhowsocietiescouldmaintaintheirintegrityandcoherenceinmodernity;anerainwhichtraditionalsocialandreligioustiesarenolongerassumed,andinwhichnewsocialinstitutionshavecomeintobeing.HisfirstmajorsociologicalworkwasTheDivisionofLaborinSociety(1893).In1895,hepublishedhisRulesoftheSociologicalMethodandsetupthefirstEuropeandepartmentofsociology,becomingFrance'sfirstprofessorofsociology.In1898,heestablishedthejournalL'AnnéeSociologique.
