作者简介

CharlesDarwinwasbornin1809toanupper-middle-classmedicalfamily.HewasdestinedforacareerineithermedicineortheAnglicanChurchbutnevercompletedhismedicalstudies:hisfuturechangedentirelyin1831whenhejoinedHMSBeagleasanaturalist.OnreturningtoEnglandin1836hebegantowriteuphistheoriesandobservationswhichculminatedinaseriesofbooks,mostfamouslyOntheOriginofSpeciesbyMeansofNaturalSelectionin1859.Hediedin1882andwasburiedinWestminsterAbbey.JoeCainisSeniorLecturerinHistoryandPhilosophyofBiologyatUniversityCollegeLondon(UCL).Hisexpertiseisinthehistoryofevolutionarystudiesinthenineteenthandtwentiethcenturies,Darwinandhistoricalmemory.
