Formorethanhalfofthetwentiethcentury,theKoreanpeninsulahasbeendividedbetweentwohostileandcompetitivenation-states,eachclaimingtobethesolelegitimateexpressionoftheKoreannation.ThedivisionremainsanunsolvedproblemdatingtothebeginningsoftheColdWarandnowprojectsthepoliticsofthatperiodintothetwenty-firstcentury.Korea'sTwentieth-CenturyOdysseyisdesignedtoprovidereaderswiththehistoricalessentialsuponwhichtounravelthecomplexpoliticsandcontemporarycrisesthatcurrentlyexistintheEastAsianregion.Beginningwithadescriptionoflate-nineteenth-centuryimperialism,MichaelRobinsonshowshowtraditionalKoreanpoliticalcultureshapedtheresponseofKoreanstomultiplethreatstotheirsovereigntyafterbeingopenedtotheworldeconomybyJapaninthe1870s.HelocatestheoriginsofbothmodernnationalismandtheeconomicandculturalmodernizationofKoreainthetwentyyearsprecedingthefallofthetraditionalstatetoJapanesecolonialismin1910.Robinsonbreaksnewgroundwithhisanalysisofthecolonialperiod,tracingtheideologicaldivisionofcontemporaryKoreatothestruggleofdifferentactorstomobilizeanationalindependencemovementatthetime.Moreimportantly,helocatesthereasonforsuccessfulJapanesehegemonyinpoliciesthatincluded--andthusimplicated--Koreanswithinthecolonialsystem.HeconcludeswithadiscussionofthepoliticalandeconomicevolutionofSouthandNorthKoreaafter1948thataccountsforthevalidlegitimacyclaimsofbothnation-statesonthepeninsula.
