Victor-MarieHugo(26February1802–22May1885)wasaFrenchpoet,playwright,novelist,essayist,visualartist,statesman,humanrightsactivistandexponentoftheRomanticmovementinFrance.InFrance,Hugo'sliteraryfamecomesfirstfromhispoetrybutalsorestsuponhisnovelsandhisdramaticachievements.Amongmanyvolumesofpoetry,LesContemplationsandLaLégendedessièclesstandparticularlyhighincriticalesteem,andHugoissometimesidentifiedasthegreatestFrenchpoet.OutsideFrance,hisbest-knownworksarethenovelsLesMisérablesandNotre-DamedeParis(alsoknowninEnglishasTheHunchbackofNotre-Dame).Thoughacommittedroyalistwhenhewasyoung,Hugo'sviewsrefinedasthedecadespassed;hebecameapassionatesupporterofrepublicanism,andhisworktouchesuponmostofthepoliticalandsocialissuesandartistictrendsofhistime.HeisburiedinthePanthéon.雨果（1802－1885）是19世纪法国著名的诗人、小说家、文学评论家和政论家，也是诗歌的革新者、浪漫派戏剧的创建者，法国人民最喜爱的作家之一。雨果1802年生于法国东部的贝桑松。父亲是拿破仑手下的一名将军，后宣誓效忠波旁复辟王朝。母亲也是王室的热烈拥护者。少年雨果思想上深受家庭熏染。1819年参与创办《文学保守者》周刊，公开维护伪古典主义。作品有诗集《短歌行与民谣集》；中篇小说《冰岛魔王》、《布格－雅加尔》等，大都带有保守主义思想倾向。２０年代后期，政治思想和文学观点有了积极的转变。1826年参与组织第二浪漫主义文社。翌年，在剧本《克伦威尔》序言中，他提出一整套浪漫主义的文学主张。该主张成为法国浪漫主义文学运动的理论纲领。
