AnthonyBurgesswasborninManchesterin1917.Heservedinthearmyfrom1940to1954beforebecomingacolonialeducationofficer.Itwaswhileheheldthispostthatdoctorstoldhimhewoulddie,andhedecidedtotrytolivebywriting.Heachievedaworldwidereputationasoneoftheleadingnovelistsofhisday,andoneofthemostversatile.Hiswritingsincludecriticism,scriptsandtranslations,andaBroadwaymusical,andhecomposedthreesymphonieswhichhavebeenpubliclyperformedintheUSA.HisbookshavebeenpublishedallovertheworldandincludeAClockworkOrange,TheClockworkTestament,InsideMrEnderby,Enderby'sDarkLady,EarthlyPowers,AbbaAbbaandTheEndoftheWorldNews.AnthonyBurgessdiedin1993.
