D.H.Lawrencewasbornin1885intoapoorworkingclassfamilyinacoalminingvillageinNottinghamshire.Thefourthchildofaschoolmistressandlittle-educatedminer,hisworkingclassupbringing,fraughtrelationshipwithhisfatherandveryclosebondwithhismotherinformedthesemi-autobiographicalSonsandLovers.Lawrencestartedhiscareerteaching,anditwasFordMadoxFordwhofirstnoticedLawrence'stalentwhenhesawsomeofhispoetryin1908.Hewentontobecomeaprolificnovelist,playwright,essayistandliterarycriticaswellaspoet,andspentthemajorityofhislifetravellinginasortofself-imposedexile,throughplacesasdiverseasAustralia,Italy,NewMexico,BavariaandSriLanka.Hediedin1930inVence,France,oftuberculosis.
