EvanS.ConnellwasborninKansasCityin1924.HeservedintheUSnavyinthesecondworldwarandlivedbrieflyinParisbeforereturningtotheUS,wherehewroteandsupportedhimselfwithoddjobs.Hisincrediblyvariedbooksrangefromlongexperimentalpoemstoabest-sellingbiographyofGeneralCuster,buthewillberememberedaboveallforhistwoundisputedmasterpiecesaboutmiddle-class,suburbanAmericanlife:MrsBridgeandMrBridge.In2009,hewasnominatedfortheManBookerInternationalPrizeforlifetimeachievement,andin2010,hewasawardedaLosAngelesTimesBookPrize.EvanS.ConnelldiedinNewMexicoon10thJanuary2013,aged88.
