JamesJoycewasborninDublinonthe2ndofFebruary1882.Despitehisfamilybeingimpoverishedbyhisfather'sfailingsasabusinessman,JoycewaseducatedatthebestJesuitschoolsandlaterin1898atUniversityCollegeDublin.HisfirstpublishedworkwasareviewonIbsen'splayWhenWeAwakenintheFortnightlyReviewin1900.Upongraduating,JoycemovedtoParisinpursuitofamedicalcareer.Beforelong,hegaveupattendinglecturesanddevotedhimselftoliterature.HereturnedtoDublinasaresultofthefatalillnessofhismotherandshortlyafterwards,in1904,JoycemetNoraBarnaclewhowaslatertobecomehiswife.Theyoungcoupletravelledtothecontinentandin1905settledinTriestewheretheyweretoremainuntil1915.Joyce'sfirstbookChamberMusicwaspublishedin1907asabookofpoetryandDublinersfollowedin1914.TheJoyceshadtwochildren;Giorgio,born1905andLuciain1907.LuciawastodevelopadisturbingmentalillnesswhichgreatlyaffectedthefamilyandwouldremainaprominentfactorfortherestofJocye'slife.DuringtheFirstWorldWarJoycemovedtoZurichwhereheremaineduntil1919whenhemovedtoParistoworkonwhatiswidelyunderstoodashisgreatestandmostprodigiouswork,Ulysses.Afterbeingworkedonforeightyears,UlysseswaspublishedinParisin1922onJoycesBirthday.ItcouldbetruetosaythatinUlysses,Joyceattemptsto'know'everythingandtoaddtothis'knowledge'bycreatinghisownlanguage.Joyce'shighlyexperimentalandrevolutionaryworkpositionedhimfirmlyasoneofthekeyfiguresofmodernism.AsspokentoGeorgesBorach,oneofJoyce'sstudentsinZurich,Joycecommentsthat'thereareindeedhardlymorethanadozenthemesinworldliterature.Thenthereisanenormousnumberofcombinationsofthesethemes.'Hegoesontodenounceallthethinkersofthelast200yearsandtopositionAristotleasthe'greatestthinkerofalltime.'SuchstatementsaretestimonytoJoyce'sdeterminationinhisquestforknowledge,toknowwhatknowledgewasandtochallengeit.JoycegreatlyadmiredauthorssuchasDante,D'AnnunzioandIbsen.JoycewasgreatlyadmiredbymanyauthorsincludingItaloSvevo,authorofZeno'sConsciencewhohemetinTriesteand,SamuelBeckettwhohemetinParis.
