ThephotographerKenOharamovedfromTokyotoNewYorkin1962,andcametopublicattentionin1970withthepublicationofOne,whichcontainedmorethan500tightclose-upsoffaces.Inthe30yearssincethen,Oharahascontinuedhisportraitstudiesingreatlyvariedforms.Thisextensivecollectionpresentssevenprojectsintheirentiretyforthefirsttime,piecesmadebetween1970and2003,someofwhichwerefirstexhibitedatMoMA,andothersthathaverarelybeenseen.Theyrangefromradicalclose-upsofhundredsofanonymousfacestoaself-portraitmadeupofphotosshoteveryminuteforaperiodof24hourstojournals--Oharaoncedocumentedayearin365imagesonanaccordionfold.Alsoincludedareportraitsinwhichtheexposureperiodforeachfaceexceededanhour.KenOhara'sworkoffersanintenseexaminationofspaceandtimeinportraitureandprovokesarethinkingofthelimitsofphotographicdepiction.
