GeorgesSimenon(1903–1989)wasbornonFebruary12th,1903inLiege,Belgium.Attheageofnineteen,SimenonembarkedtoParistobeginacareerasawriter.In1923hebeganpublishingundervariouspseudonyms,andin1929begantheInspectorMaigretserieswhichhelpedelevatehimtoahouseholdnameincontinentalEurope.Hisprolificoutputofmorethanfourhundrednovelsandthegripping,darkrealismofhisprosehascementedhimasaninedliblefixtureoftwentiethcenturyliterature.Hediedin1989inLausanne,Switzerland.DavidBellosisthedirectorofthePrograminTranslationandInterculturalCommunicationatPrincetonUniversity,whereheisalsoaprofessorofFrenchandcomparativeliterature.HehaswonmanyawardsforhistranslationsofGeorgesPerec,IsmailKadare,andothers,includingtheManBookerInternationalTranslator’sAward.
