DengXiaoping（邓小平）visitedtheUnitedStatesasVice-PremieroftheStateCouncilofthePeople\'sRepublicofChina，fromJanuary28toFebruary5，1979，ninedaysinall，markingamajoreventinthehistoryofSino-U.S.relations.ThisvisitwasaforwardingmoveinthewakeofthethawachievedbetweenChinaandtheUnitedStates，ofwhichthegrandgroundworkhadbeenlaidbyMaoZedong（毛泽东）andZhouEnlai（周恩来）intheearly1970s，withavisionofinauguratingChina\'sfutureinternationalinfluenceandpavingthewayforChina\'sgradualreformandopeningup，alongsidetheimplementationofitsmodernizationprogram.IworkedwithChinaDailyNews（美洲华侨日报）inNewYorkasdeputyeditor-in-chiefandalsoinchargeofnewsreportingwhenDengXiaopingvisitedtheUnitedStates，soIwasnaturallyassignedandduty-boundtocovertheentireevent.Ibroughtalongacolleagueofphotographyforthetask，andwesharedinthedivisionoflaborasfollows：Iwasresponsibleforthetextreporting，whilehewasresponsiblefortakingpictures；Icontactedofficialpersonnel，andhearrangedtransportationandaccommodation.Closecollaborationbetweenthebothofusgarneredanextraordinaryharvest.
