JaneAustenwasbornatSteventon,Hampshire,in1775,thedaughterofaclergyman.Attheageof9shewassenttoschoolatReadingwithhereldersisterCassandra,whowasherlifelongfriendandcondifante,butshewaslargelytoughtbyherfather.Shebegantowriteforrecreationwhilestillinherteens.In1801thefamilymovedtoBath,thesceneofsomanyepisodesinherbooksand,afterthedeathofherfatherin1805,toSouthamptonandthentothevillageofChawton,nearAltoninHampshire.HeresheliveduneventfullyuntilMay1817,whenthefamilymovedtoWinchesterseekingskilledmedicalattentionforherill-health,butshediedtwomonthslater.SheisburiedinWinchesterCathedral.Herbest-knownnovelsareSenseandSensibility(1811),PrideandPrejudice(1813),MansfieldPark(1814),Emma(1816),andNorthangerAbbeyandPersuasion,bothpublishedposthumouslyin1818.
