CzeslawMiloszwasbornin1911inSzetejnie,Lithuania.HesurvivedWorldWarIIinWarsaw,publishingintheundergroundpress,afterwhichhewasstationedinNewYork,Washington,andParisasaculturalattachÉfromPoland.HedefectedtoFrancein1951,andin1960heacceptedapositionattheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley.AlthoughhiswritingwasbannedinPoland,hewasneverthelessawardedthe1980NobelPrizeforLiterature.Hediedin2004inKrakÓw.
