GarrettBirkhoffpublishedmorethan200papersandsupervisedmorethan50Ph.Ds.HewasamemberoftheNationalAcademyofSciencesandtheAmericanAcademyofArtsandSciences.HespentmostofhiscareerasaprofessorofmathematicsatHarvardUniversity.Duringthe1930s,Birkhoff,alongwithhisHarvardcolleaguesMarshallStoneandSaundersMacLane,substantiallyadvancedAmericanteachingandresearchinabstractalgebra.His1935paper,"OntheStructureofAbstractAlgebras"foundedanewbranchofmathematics,universalalgebra.SaundersMacLanewastheauthororco-authorofmorethan100researchpapersandsixbooks.MacLanewaselectedtotheNationalAcademyofSciencesin1949.Hereceivedthenation'shighestawardforscientificachievement,theNationalMedalofScience,in1989.MacLanereceivedtwoGuggenheimFellowshipsandvisitedAustraliaasaFulbrightScholar.OtherhonorsincludeboththeChauvenetPrizeandtheDistinguishedServiceawardoftheMathematicalAssociationofAmerica,theSteeleCareerPrizeoftheAmericanMathematicalSociety,andhonoraryfellowshipintheRoyalSocietyofEdinburgh.
