RobertSheckley(1928–2005)wasborninNewYorkCityandraisedinMaplewood,NewJersey.HejoinedthearmyshortlyafterhighschoolandservedinKoreafrom1946to1948.ReturningtoNewYork,SheckleycompletedaBAdegreeatNewYorkUniversityandlatertookajobinanaircraftfactory,leavingassoonashewasabletosupporthimselfbysellingshortstories.Inthe1950sand’60shisstoriesappearedregularlyinscience-fictionmagazines,especiallyGalaxy,aswellasinPlayboyandEsquire.Inadditiontothesciencefictionforwhichheisbestknown,Sheckleyalsowrotesuspenseandmysterystoriesandtelevisionscreenplays;from1979to1982hewasthefictioneditorofOmnimagazine.Sheckleytraveledwidely,settlingforstretchesoftimeinGreenwichVillage,Ibiza,London,andPortland,Oregon.ManyofSheckley’smorethanfifteennovelsandroughlyfourhundredshortstorieshavebeentranslatedandfourhavebeenadaptedforfilm.In2001hewasnamedAuthorEmeritusbytheScienceFictionandFantasyWritersofAmerica.AlexAbramovichhasbeenaneditorofFeed,Flavorpill,andVeryShortListandawriterforTheNewYorkTimes,TheLondonReviewofBooks,andotherpublications.HelivesinOakland,California,andAstoria,Queens.JonathanLethemistheauthorofeightnovels,includingGirlinLandscapeandChronicCity,andfivecollectionsofstoriesandessays,includingTheEcstasyofInfluence(2011).HehaspreviouslywrittentheintroductionsfortheNYRBClassicseditionsofAMeaningfulLifebyL.J.DavisandOntheYardbyMalcolmBraly.HeteachesatPomonaCollegeandlivesinLosAngelesandMaine.
