JonathanSwiftwasborninDublinon30November1667,somemonthsafterhisfather'sdeath.HewassenttoKilkennyGrammarSchoolwhenhewassixandlaterattendedTrinityCollege,Dublin,wherehereceivedhisBAdegreein1686.HeisconsideredtheforemostprosesatiristintheEnglishlanguage,whichstemmedfromhiscriticismofBritain'srepressivecolonialpoliciesinIreland.AmongSwift'sbestknownworksishisironicmasterpiece,'AModestProposal'(1729),andhisnovel,Gulliver'sTravels(1726).Swiftdiedon19October1745.CaroleFabricantisProfessorofEnglishattheUniversityofCalifornia,Riverside.SheistheauthorofSwift'sLandscapeandhaspublishedwidelyonanumberofeighteenth-centurywriters,includingAlexanderPope,EdmundBurkeandBishopBerkeley,aswellasontopicssuchaslandscapegardening,travel,tourismandquestionsofcolonialismandraceintheeighteenth-centruy,especiallyastheyrelatetoBritish-Irishrelationsduringtheperiod.
