TrumanCapotewasborninNewOrleansin1925andwasraisedinvariouspartsofthesouth,hisfamilyspendingwintersinNewOrleansandsummersinAlabamaandNewGeorgia.Bytheageoffourteenhehadalreadystartedwritingshortstories,someofwhichwerepublished.HeleftschoolwhenhewasfifteenandsubsequentlyworkedfortheNewYorkerwhichprovidedhisfirst-andlast-regularjob.FollowinghisspellwiththeNewYorker,CapotespenttwoyearsonaLouisianafarmwherehewroteOtherVoices,OtherRooms(1948).Helived,atonetimeoranother,inGreece,Italy,AfricaandtheWestIndies,andtravelledinRussiaandtheOrient.Heistheauthorofmanyhighlypraisedbooks,includingATreeofNightandOtherStories(1949),TheGrassHarp(1951),BreakfastatTiffany's(1958),InColdBlood(1965),whichimmediatelybecamethecentreofastormofcontroversyonitspublication,MusicforChameleons(1980)andAnsweredPrayers(1986),allofwhicharepublishedbyPenguin.TrumanCapotediedinAugust1984.
