GeorgesBataille,Frenchessayistandnovelist,wasbornin1897.HeconvertedtoCatholicism,thentoMarxism,andwasinterestedinpsychoanalysisandmysticism.AscuratorofthemunicipallibraryinOrleans,heledarelativelysimplelife,althoughhebecameinvolved,usuallyonthefringes,withthesurrealistmovement.HefoundedtheliteraryreviewCritiquein1946,whichheediteduntilhisdeathin1962,andwasalsoafounderofthereviewDocuments,whichpublishedmanyoftheleadingsurrealistwriters.Hiswritingisamixtureofpoetryandphilosophy,fantasyandhistory,andhisfirstnovel,StoryoftheEye,waswrittenunderthepseudonymofLordAuch.Bataille'sotherworksincludethenovelsBlueofNoon,L'AbbéCandMyMother,andthevolumesofessaysEroticismandLiteratureandEvil.
