CharlesDickenswasbornonFebruary7,1812,inLandport,Portsea,England.HediedinKentonJune9,1870.Thesecondofeightchildrenofafamilycontinuallyplaguedbydebt,theyoungDickenscametoknownotonlyhungerandprivation,butalsothehorroroftheinfamousdebtors’prisonandtheevilsofchildlabor.Aturnoffortuneintheshapeofalegacybroughtreleasefromthenightmareofprisonand“slave”factoriesandaffordedDickenstheopportunityoftwoyears’formalschoolingatWellingtonHouseAcademy.Heworkedasanattorney’sclerkandnewspaperreporteruntilhisSketchesbyBoz(1836)andThePickwickPapers(1837)broughthimtheamazingandinstantsuccessthatwastobehisfortheremainderofhislife.Inlateryears,thepressureofserialwriting,editorialduties,lectures,andsocialcommitmentsledtohisseparationfromCatherineHogarthaftertwenty-threeyearsofmarriage.Italsohastenedhisdeathattheageoffifty-eight,whenhewascharacteristicallyengagedinamultitudeofwork.
