AlanAlexanderMilnewasborninHampsteadin1882andattendedanindependentschoolrunbyhisfatherbeforestudyingmathematicsatCambridge.AfteruniversityheworkedasanAssistantEditoratthemagazinePunchandestablishedhimselfasasuccessfulauthorofbothplaysandnovels,includingTheRedHouseMysteryuntil,withthepublicationofWhenWeWereVeryYoungin1924andWinnie-the-Poohin1926hiscareertookaverydifferentturn.Milnecontinuedtoproduceworksforadultsbutoccasionallyresentedthesuccessofhischildren'sstories,whichovershadowedmuchofhisotherwork.In1952A.A.MilnesufferedastrokeafterbrainsurgeryandretiredtohiscountryhomeinSussexasaninvalid.Hediedtherefouryearslater.
