SamuelPhillipsHuntington(April18,1927–December24,2008)wasaninfluentialconservativepoliticalscientistfromtheUnitedStatesofAmericawhoseworkscoveredmultiplesub-fieldsofpoliticalscience.HegainedwiderprominencethroughhisClashofCivilizations(1993,1996)thesisofapost-ColdWarnewworldorder.HewasamemberofHarvard'sdepartmentofgovernmentfrom1950untilhewasdeniedtenurein1959.From1959to1962hewasanassociateprofessorofgovernmentatColumbiaUniversitywherehewasalsoDeputyDirectorofTheInstituteforWarandPeaceStudies.HuntingtonwasinvitedtoreturntoHarvardwithtenurein1963andremainedthereuntilhisdeath.HewaselectedaFellowoftheAmericanAcademyofArtsandSciencesin1965.HuntingtonandWarrenDemianManshelco-foundedandco-editedForeignPolicy.Huntingtonstayedasco-editoruntil1977.HisfirstmajorbookwasTheSoldierandtheState:TheTheoryandPoliticsofCivil-MilitaryRelations,(1957)whichwashighlycontroversialwhenitwaspublished,buttodayisregardedasthemostinfluentialbookonAmericancivil-militaryrelations.HebecameprominentwithhisPoliticalOrderinChangingSocieties(1968),aworkthatchallengedtheconventionalviewofmodernizationtheorists,thateconomicandsocialprogresswouldproducestabledemocraciesinrecentlydecolonizedcountries.AsaconsultanttotheU.S.DepartmentofState,andinaninfluential1968articleinForeignAffairs,headvocatedtheconcentrationoftheruralpopulationofSouthVietnamasameansofisolatingtheVietCong.Healsowasco-authorofTheCrisisofDemocracy:OntheGovernabilityofDemocracies,areportissuedbytheTrilateralCommissionin1976.During1977and1978,intheadministrationofJimmyCarter,hewastheWhiteHouseCoordinatorofSecurityPlanningfortheNationalSecurityCouncil.HuntingtondiedonDecember24,2008,atage81inMartha'sVineyard,Massachusetts.
