OnOctober16,1843,SirWilliamRowanHamiltondiscoveredquaternionsand,ontheverysameday,presentedhisbreakthroughtotheRoyalIrishAcademy.Meanwhile,inalessdramaticstyle,aGermanhighschoolteacher,HermannGrassmann,wasdevelopinganothervectorialsysteminvolvinghypercomplexnumberscomparabletoquaternions.Thecreationsofthesetwomathematiciansledtoothervectorialsystems,mostnotablythesystemofvectoranalysisformulatedbyJosiahWillardGibbsandOliverHeavisideandnowalmostuniversallyemployedinmathematics,physicsandengineering.YettheGibbs-Heavisidesystemwonacceptanceonlyafterdecadesofdebateandcontroversyinthelatterhalfofthenineteenthcenturyconcerningwhichofthecompetingsystemsofferedthegreatestadvantagesformathematicalpedagogyandpractice.
