HowardVanDorenShawdesignedstatelycountryhousesinandaroundChicago—fromaffluentLakeForest,Illinois,andLakeGeneva,Wisconsin,toIowa,Minnesota,Ohio,andIndiana—from1894to1926,aperiodinAmericanarchitecturethatspannedtheGildedAge,theadoptionofBeaux-Artsclassicismastheidealforcivicarchitecture,theinventionoftheskyscraper,andthebeginningofmodernism.Bornin1869,heworkedfortheleadingindustrialistsofthatperiod,includingReubenH.Donnelleyofprintingfame,newspapergiantJosephMedillPatterson,EdwardForsterSwift,themeatpackingking,andEdwardL.RyersonofRyersonSteel.AcontemporaryofFrankLloydWright,ShawexploredmanyofthesameideasasthePrairieSchoolArchitectswithintheformsoftraditionalarchitecture.Thoughhewasrecognizedasoneoftheleadingcountryhousearchitectsoftheearlytwentiethcentury,hisnamewaslargelyforgottenafterhisdeath.Likemanytraditionalarchitectspracticingtoday,Shawwasskilledatadaptinghistoricprecedentstosuitcontemporaryliving,inparticulartheeasyflowofinteriorspacethatbecameadesignhallmarkoftheperiodfortraditionalistsandmodernistsalike.ForthenewandfashionablesuburbofLakeForest,ShawcreatedMarketSquare,thetowncenter,whichwaslaudedforitsdesignasbothauniquetowngreenandthefirstAmericanshoppingcenterdesignedtoaccommodateautomobiles.ThistimelyreappraisalofHowardVanDorenShaw’sworkfeaturesmanypreviouslyunpublishedimagesfromtheShawArchiveintheBurnhamandRyersonLibraryattheArtInstituteofChicagoandtheChicagoHistoryMuseum,rareconstructiondrawings,andnewcolorphotographyaswellasacatalogueofShaw’sresidentialwork.Hislegacyincludessubstantialhousesinprosperouscommunities,manyofwhicharestillstanding—includingRagdale,onceShaw’sownsummerhouseinLakeForest,nowhometotheprestigiousartists’community;theBeckerEstateonChicago’sNorthShore;andTheHermannHouseoverlookingLakeMichigan.
