RudyardKiplingwasborninBombayonDecember30th1865,sonofJohnLockwoodKipling,anartistandteacherofarchitecturalsculpture,andhiswifeAlice.HismotherwasoneofthetalentedandbeautifulMacdonaldsisters,fourofwhommarriedremarkablemen,SirEdwardBurne-Jones,SirEdwardPoynter,AlfredBaldwin,andJohnLockwoodKiplinghimself.YoungRudyard'searliestyearsinBombaywereblissfullyhappy,inanIndiafullofexoticsightsandsounds.ButatthetenderageoffivehewassentbacktoEnglandtostaywithafosterfamilyinSouthsea,wherehewasdesperatelyunhappy.Theexperiencewouldcoloursomeofhislaterwriting.WhenhewastwelvehewenttotheUnitedServicesCollegeatWestwardHo!nearBideford,wheretheHeadmaster,CormellPrice,afriendofhisfatheranduncles,fosteredhisliteraryability.Stalky&Co.,basedonthoseschooldays,hasbeenmuchrelishedbygenerationsofschoolboys.Despitepooreyesightwhichhandicappedhimonthegamesfield,hebegantoblossom.In1882,agedsixteen,hereturnedtoLahore,wherehisparentsnowlived,toworkontheCivilandMilitaryGazette,andlateronitssisterpaperthePioneerinAllahabad.Inhislimitedsparetimehewrotemanyremarkablepoemsandstorieswhichwerepublishedalongsidehisreporting.Whenthesewerecollectedandpublishedasbooks,theyformedthebasisofhisearlyfame.
