作者简介

JacquesBarzun,ahistorianandculturalcritic,isoneofthemostprolificandwide-rangingAmericanwritersofthetwentiethcentury.BarzunwasborninGreteil,France,in1907.HecametotheUnitedStatesin1920,enteredColumbiaUniversityin1923,andgraduatedmagnacumlaudein1927.HejoinedColumbia'sfacultyin1929asaninstructorwhilecontinuinghisstudiesingraduateschoolthere,earningadoctorateinFrenchhistoryin1932.BarzinwasbeenassociatedwithColumbiaUniversityformorethanfortyyears.Hebecameafullprofessorin1945,wasdeanofgraduatefacultiesfrom1955to1958,deanoffacultiesfrom1958to1967,andoneofthesponsorsoftheuniversity'stwo-yearWesternCivilizationcourse,featuringthegreatbooksofWesternliterature.HeretiredfromColumbiaUniversityin1975,buthascontinuedtowriteextensively.ThecoreofBarzun'swork,whichhehasintendedforbothageneralandanacademicaudience,istheimportanceofstudyinghistorytounderstandthepresentandafundamentalrespectforintellect.Althoughhehaswrittenonsubjectsasdiverseasdetectivefictionandbaseball,heisespeciallyknownforhismanybooksonmusic,nineteenth-centuryromanticismandeducation.HisworksincludeDarwin,MarxandWagner:CritiqueofaHeritage(1941),RomanticismandtheModernEgo(1943);TheHouseofIntellect(1956),Race:AStudyinSuperstition(1965),SimpleandDirect:ARhetoricforWriters(1976)AStrollwithWilliamJames(1983),andTheCultureWeDeserve(1989).AllfeatureBarzun'sbroadscholarship,carefulthinking,andclear,wittystyle.雅克·巴尔赞为美国著名史学大师,他以三十多部文化史和文化批评论著蜚声海内外。1907年生于法国,1920年赴美国。从哥伦比亚学院毕业后,他留校教书,为历史教授,并连续十年担任教务长。他曾两度荣获美国艺术和文学学会批评家金奖,并曾两次任该学会会长。
